Sodium Hydroxide

NaOH

Sodium hydroxide, commonly known as caustic soda or lye, is a highly alkaline (basic) inorganic compound with the chemical formula NaOH. It appears as a white, odorless solid in pellet, flake, or granular form and is highly soluble in water, releasing significant heat upon dissolution.

Sodium hydroxide is highly corrosive, especially to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, and requires careful handling with appropriate safety equipment. It reacts vigorously with acids, some metals, and organic materials.

Due to its strong reactivity and widespread use, sodium hydroxide is an essential chemical in both laboratory and industrial settings.

It is widely used in various industrial and household applications, including:

  • Manufacturing of paper, textiles, and detergents
  • Water treatment
  • Petroleum refining
  • Food processing (e.g., curing olives, making pretzels)
  • Soap and biodiesel production

Packaging and Storage

We can supply sodium hydroxide in a 55 lb (25 kg) and 110 lb (50 Kg) bag Pack and can ship a 20 feet container contains 26 MT of Flakes.

Storage:

  • Store in tightly sealed containers made of compatible materials such as stainless steel, polyethylene, or PVC.
  • Keep in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area away from moisture and incompatible substances (e.g., acids, organic materials, aluminum, and zinc).
  • Protect from exposure to air as sodium hydroxide is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture and CO₂ from air).
  • Label containers clearly and use corrosion-resistant secondary containment.

Handling:

  • Wear appropriate PPE: chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles or face shield, long sleeves or lab coat, and suitable footwear.
  • Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Do not inhale dust or mist.
  • When dissolving in water, always add NaOH to water slowly while stirring—never the reverse—due to the highly exothermic reaction.
  • Use non-sparking tools and corrosion-resistant equipment during handling.
  • Ensure emergency eyewash and shower stations are accessible nearby.
